Why Meditate?

When I first heard the word ‘meditation’ I used to think of it as just sitting for a few minutes in a yoga position while keeping quiet. Not really knowing that there is so much more surrounding that one little term. Let me share a bit about it!

What is meditation?

In order for us to meditate correctly we must first understand what exactly meditation is. We sometimes think of it as not being able to hear voices while practicing it, concentrating on a certain idea or even an exercise because of the postures. But what actually happens when you reach the state of meditation? We reach the depth in our mind. Our minds reach peace and we are calm. Yes, we remain quiet and may seem to be away (mentally), but we are completely aware of our surroundings.

What can meditation do for me?

Life never seems to fail to take us through a road that makes us feel that there is so much noise and we can’t really seem to hear anything. You can’t focus on your thoughts clearly because you have so much going on all at once. Does this sound familiar? You are not alone, everyone has their own world in their mind that causes stress to take over and interfere with our emotions. We must open our eyes and see that there are ways to help us cope with the battle in our minds. “Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that mediation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day,” (MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program, Sara Lazar.) Meditation will alter our mind. We learn to deal with negative experiences in a better way. This leads to having a more positive life and with positivity comes happiness!

Where do I begin?

Start small. If you go into it trying to do it for an hour your first time, you will end up feeling frustrated and will get discouraged. This is not something you reach by just sitting down and taking deep breaths. It takes practice and sometimes the right teacher to show us how to get there. If you’re completely sure you won’t be able to do this alone we recommend you try a meditation class. Sometimes having a teacher there to tell us what steps to take can help. This can also serve as inspiration from their personal meditation experience.
